Teddy Kumpel has been a sought-after guitar slinger for artists including Joe Jackson, Rickie Lee Jones, Feist, Marshall Crenshaw and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors as well as a respected producer/mixer in NY’s fertile indie rock scene. Lately Teddy has been on fire with his trio, I mean… Orchestra, mixing his songwriting, improvisations and deep funk pocket. The rotating cast keeps things fresh and showcases Kumpel’s humorous lyrics, mad guitar skills and instantaneous production savvy.

Aside from his work on films such as the 2010 Emmy award winning score on the HBO film “Temple Grandin” and his co-production of the debut album for artist Anna F in Austria which won the Amadeus RECORD OF THE YEAR and Best Pop/Rock record of the year awards in 2010, Teddy has worked with artists as diverse as Feist, Rickie Lee Jones, Nine Inch Nails, Marshall Crenshaw, David Grisman, Laura Branigan, Teddy Thompson, Ana Egge, Billy Martin, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Chris Brown and Kate Fenner, Luther Wright and the Wrongs, Megan Palmer, Sharissa, Saul Zonana, John Robinson, Michael Bland, Omar Hakim, Kenny Wollesen’s marching band, Janet Jackson, Paquito D’Rivera, Jenny Scheinman, Jonah Smith, Ric Firebracci, Will Lee, The Zen Tricksters, Jim Pin, Funk Filharmonik, Michael Blake and Blake Tartare, Toots Hibbert, Toots Thielmans, Frankie Paul, Timothy “Speed” Levitch, Chris Barron, Aaron Comess and Eric Schenkman of the Spin Doctors, Arnie Lawrence, Martha Redbone, Goodie Mob, Sex Mob, Tony Scherr, Tower of Power, Leslie Mendelson, Clark Gayton’s Explorations in Dub, Spottiswoode and His Enemies, Frankie Paul, Dennis Brown, The Barbarians, The Supremes, Mbalafunk, India Arie and many feature film scores composed by his long time pal and Emmy winner Alex Wurman including “Anchorman”, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and “Taladega Nights”.

LOOPestra: an orchestra of guitar loops

Despite what the multi layered sound might tell you, everything you hear from the Teddy Kumpel Loopestra on stage is played live. With innovative use of looping technology and his vast experience mangling vintage and modern sounds Teddy Kumpel effortlessly creates myriad textures that make you think there must be a whole slew of musicians hiding backstage. A veritable funkdafied psychadelic orchestra appearing as a rock trio!

Joining Teddy every Monday @midnight at the Rockwood Music Hall are New York’s best and brightest musicians. A different rhythm section every week. Shawn Pelton and James Genus who play on Saturday Night Live, Keith Carlock who plays with Steely Dan, Aaron Comess of the Spin Doctors, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen of Bill Frisell’s band, and world reknown musicians Tim LeFebvre, Henry Hey, Richard Hammond, Jonathan Maron, Mark Guiliana, Josh Dion, Bob Stander, Allison Miller, Rene Hart, Chris Morrissey, Jojo Mayer, Ben Perowsky etc… it’s a rotating cast of NYC music stars. “It’s all about building community for me” says Teddy. “I like to have the well known guys my age do it cause they’re amazing and I’ve known them all forever, but equally, I like it when the really great young guys do it, like Aaron Steele and Adam Minkoff. People come out to hear the famous ones, but they also come out to hear what young ones are going to do. It keeps it interesting and real. I want everyone I feel a musical connection with to have a chance to play.”

I love the Infinity for its versatility in such a minimalist package. You can use it in the simplest way or go whole HOG with a MIDI controller and tweak to your heart’s content. It’s the best SOUNDING looper ever made and it’s got soul and brains!
